Timeline of pivotal events in Moorish history.

The Moabites, member of a West-Semitic people who originated in the highlands east of the Dead Sea (now in west-central Jordan) and flourished in the 9th century BC,  received permission from the Pharaohs of Egypt to settle and inhabit North-West Africa; they were the founders and are the true possessors of the present Moroccan Empire, along their Canaanite, Hittite, and Amorite brethren who sojourned from the land of Canaan seeking new homes(Phoenicians).  Their dominion and inhabitation extended from North-East and South-West Africa, across great Atlantis even unto the present North, South, and Central America and also Mexico and the Atlantis Islands; before the great earthquake, which caused the great Atlantic Ocean. Ruth the Moabitess marries Boaz, an Israelite, initiating the amalgamation of the the two nations.

Maryam gives birth to Prophet Jesus, whom himself was of the true blood of the ancient Canaanites and Moabites, seeking to redeem His people from under the Roman yoke and law, Rome “crucified” Him according to their law. Then the foundation of Christianity began in Rome and the Roman nations founded the first Church.

The Prophet Muhammad is born in Mecca. He comes from a noble family and is well-known for his honesty and upright character. At the age of 40, Muhammad is visited by the angel Gabriel while on retreat in a cave near Mecca. The angel recites to him the first revelations of the Quran and informs him that he is God’s prophet. Later, Muhammad is told to call his people to the worship of the one God, but they react with hostility and begin to persecute him and his followers. After enduring persecution in Mecca, Muhammad and his followers migrate to the nearby town of Yathrib (later to be known as Medina), where the people there accepted Islam. This marks the “hijrah” or “emigration,” and the beginning of the Islamic calendar. In Medina, Muhammad establishes an Islamic state based on the laws revealed in the Quran and the inspired guidance coming to him from God. The prophet clears the idols and images out of the Kaaba and rededicates it to the worship of God alone. Muhammad dies after a prolonged illness. Some members Muslim community elects his father-in-law and close associate, Abu Bakr, as caliph, or successor. Muslims enter the area north of Arabia, known as “Sham,” including Syria, Palestine, Lebanon and Iraq. The Muslims enter Egypt and rout the Byzantine army. Islam begins to spread throughout North Africa. Imam Ali is killed, bringing to an end the rule of the four “righteous caliphs”: Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali. This also marks the beginning of the Umayyad rule.

In 711, troops mostly formed by Moors from northern Africa led the Umayyad conquest of Hispania. Their general, Tariq ibn Ziyad, brought most of Iberia under Islamic rule in an eight-year campaign. They continued northeast across the Pyrenees Mountains but were defeated by the Franks at the Battle of Tours in 732, only after a contingent of Frankish soldiers raided the Moorish camp during the battle and slaughtering the women and probably children, demoralizing the Moorish soldiers. Bringing women on war campaigns was a common practice in those days. The Iberian Peninsula then came to be known in Classical Arabic as al-Andalus, which at its peak included most of modern day southern France and modern-day Spain and Portugal and in 827, the Moors even occupied  Sicily,  eventually consolidating the entire island. The Maghreb fell into a civil war in 739 that lasted until 743 known as the “Berber Revolt“. The Moors revolted against the Umayyads, putting an end to Eastern dominion over the Maghreb. Despite racial tensions, Arabs and Moors intermarried frequently. A few years later, the Eastern branch of the Umayyad dynasty was dethroned by the Abbasids and the Umayyad Caliphate overthrown in the Abbasid revolution (746-750)Abd al-Rahman I, who was of Arab-Moorish lineage, managed to evade the Abbasids and flee to the Maghreb and then Iberia, where he founded the Emirate of Córdoba and the Andalusian branch of the Umayyad dynasty. The Moors ruled north and west Africa, the Americas, and Al-Andalus for several centuries thereafter.

Although raids had occurred since soon after the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula in the 710s, the terms “Barbary privateers”, “Barbary corsairs” are normally applied to the raiders active from the 16th century onwards, when the frequency and range of the slavers’ attacks increased. In that period, Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli came under the sovereignty of the Ottoman Empire, their Hittite brethren either as directly administered provinces or as autonomous dependencies known as the” Barbary states”. From 1559, these African cities, although nominally part of the Ottoman Empire, were in fact semi-autonomous republics that chose their own rulers and profited from war booty captured from the Spanish and Portuguese as well as their lucrative trade between the two Muslim Empires. There are several cases of Sephardic Jews (Jewish Moors), who upon fleeing Iberia turned to attacking the Spanish Empire’s shipping under the Ottoman flag, a profitable strategy of revenge for the Inquisition‘s religious persecution. Around 1518–1587, the beylerbeys were admirals of the sultan, commanding great fleets and conducting war operations for political ends. They were soldiers, traders and slave-hunters. After 1587, the sole object of their successors became plunder, on land and sea. The maritime operations were conducted by the captains, or reises, who formed a class or even a corporation. Cruisers were fitted out by investors and commanded by the reises. Ten percent of the value of the prizes was paid to the pasha or his successors, who bore the titles of agha or dey or bey. In Morocco similar raids were undertaken from Salé and other ports therein. During this time the Moroccans had retained their sovereignty and enjoyed trade agreements and partnerships with the Ottoman State. Moorish corsairs captured thousands of merchant ships and repeatedly raided coastal towns. As a result, residents abandoned their former villages of long stretches of coast in Spain and Italy. Between 100,000 and 250,000 Iberians were enslaved by these raids. The 14th century Tunisian corsairs  provoked a Franco-Genoese attack on Mahdia in 1390, also known as the “Barbary Crusade“.  Moorish refugees of the Reconquista  added to the numbers, However with the expansion of the Ottoman Empire and the arrival of the privateer and admiral Kemal Reis in 1487  the Ottoman-Moorish powers became dominant in the region, controlling much of the Mediterranean. From bases on the Barbary coast, North Africa, the Moorish privateers raided ships traveling through the Mediterranean and along the northern and western coasts of Africa, seizing  their cargo and enslaving the people they captured. From at least 1500, the privateers also conducted raids along seaside towns of Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, England, the Netherlands and as far away as Iceland, capturing men, women, and children. Between 1609 and 1616, England alone had 466 merchant ships lost to Barbary privateers. It is also during this time 1606, King James I of England granted charters to both the Plymouth Company and the London Company for the purpose of establishing permanent settlements in America. The London Company established the Colony of Virginia in 1607, the first permanently settled English colony on the continent. The Plymouth Company founded the Popham Colony on the Kennebec River, but it was short-lived. The Plymouth Council for New England sponsored several colonization projects, culminating with Plymouth Colony in 1620 which was settled by English Puritan separatists, known today as the Pilgrims. The Dutch, Swedish, and French also established successful American colonies at roughly the same time as the English, but they eventually came under the English crown.

Around the year 1774 many of the Asiatic people of North America, who were of Moorish descent, started to fall into indentured servitude and slavery, with Africans brought via the Atlantic slave trade, eventually the nationality of the Moors was taken away from them, and the words negro, black and colored, were given to them thus dwindling Moroccan influence in the Americas. The United States Declaration of Independence, formally The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America was adopted by the Second Continental Congress meeting at Pennsylvania State House in PhiladelphiaPennsylvania, on July 4, 1776. Enacted during the American Revolution, the Declaration explains why the Thirteen Colonies regarded themselves as thirteen independent sovereign states and no longer subject to British colonial rule. With the Declaration, the 13 states took a collective first step in forming the United States and in the process formalized the American Revolutionary War, which had been ongoing since 1775.   On December 20, 1777, Sultan Mohammed III of Morocco issued a declaration recognizing the colonies as  independent nations, and stating that American  merchant ships could enjoy safe passage into the Mediterranean and along the coast. Until this period British treaties with the North African states protected American ships from the Moroccan-Ottoman privateers.  Morocco was the first Sovereign nation to publicly recognize the United States, and in 1784 it became the first Moorish power to seize an American vessel after the nation achieved independence in order to formalize the relations with the Moroccan–American Treaty of Friendship signed in 1786, which stands as the U.S.’s oldest non-broken friendship treaty. with a foreign power. The other Moorish states had difficulty securing uniform compliance with a total prohibition of slave-raiding, as this had been traditionally of central importance to the North African economy. Algiers subsequently renewed its slave-raiding, though on a smaller scale. The Moorish threat led directly to the United States founding the United States Navy in March 1794. While the United States did secure peace treaties with the Moorish states, it was still obliged to pay tribute for protection from attack. From 1795, the annual tribute paid to the Regency of Algiers amounted to around 20% of United States federal government‘s annual expenditures, with the United States paying tribute until the start of the “Second Barbary War”, eventually France conquered the Algiers state in 1830.  The transatlantic slave trade had been outlawed in many nations including the United States by the early 1800s, however many of the Asiatic Indigenous people of the Americas and descendants of Africans held in American slavery weren’t emancipated until 1865. During  Trans-Atlantic slavery period many brought from Africa were mostly Iberian/Sicilian Moorish refugees and their descendants, who’s cultures, customs, and languages were too alien to their North African and West African brethren, who in turn made profit of their misfortune and sold them to European slavers, causing their cultures to be blended and subdued with the descendants of the once distant-brethren that had already been subdued in the Americas. After the Emancipation Proclamation and American Civil War these Moorish descendants were granted their freedom and many of those whom could identify with the African continent went back, creating the modern day country of Liberia, while those whom were native to the Americas and those whos’ ancestors were Moorish-European remained and they were not welcomed as citizens to many existing states resulting in the creation of the 14th Amendment. It was during this period the Prophet Noble Drew Ali was born in North Carolina 1886 to go on and reorganize the 1st Moorish-Moroccan polity since the European colonial conquests of the Moorish Territories.
